Proper Connection
HIGH ABOVE AUSTIN
With sweeping views of Lady Bird Lake and downtown Austin, this two-story penthouse unit had the misfortune of an ill-placed and confined stairway that would be more at home in a suburban McMansion than inside this tony high-rise abode.
Embracing our client’s desire for a new modern way of living, we were charged with creating a functional piece of art that would allow an ease of movement between the levels. The result of careful planning is a suspended steel, glass, and aircraft cable stairway that unfolds itself from above and delicately extends down to the main living level – allowing new light-filled connections between floors and adjacent living spaces.
Once a purely utilitarian means of transport between floors, the stair now serves as a piece of art at the core of the home.
